Day 11 Jan 2007
Why Burkina? I've met so many people who don't even know this State exists, and it made me think that it was a country that didn't deserve the effort of such a tiring journey. When I arrived in Oagadougou (Ouaga to friends), I understood that I was risking not knowing a reality that turned out to be fascinating. It's true that our students don't know that Burkina exists, and it's equally true that the Burkinabé know us very well, if only thanks to Totti and some other Italian who represents us all in the world. Burkina is known as the Country of upright men and indeed it is, among all Sub-Saharan countries, the one where the population appears most serene and, in its absolute poverty, most dignifiedly hospitable.
In Burkina I went with my wife to visit a mission of the Camillian Fathers in Nanoro, a perfectly efficient Hospital where I found people who taught me what it means to love Africa and Africans. In Nanoro I found a friend, Père Gilbert, a Priest the likes of which you rarely find in Europe, a man who the first time you see him seems like you've always known him. I returned three more times to that wonderful country until a road accident, one of those that can only happen in Africa, tore my friend Gilbert from life, leaving a void, but above all depriving me of an interpreter of that culture and of the meaning of life who also took away my desire to return. I'm writing off the cuff, just as I believe that when traveling you should always go off the cuff, only that way will you have the opportunity to meet some of those people who make every country the best place in the world.
Anyone interested in learning more about the Mission created by Gilbert, try dedicating a few minutes of your life to visiting the website Life, mourning, industriousness, disappointments, the struggle to survive and the hope of not losing those close to us.....c'est l'Afrique
